I went
to a UNICEF luncheon this week where I met Ishmael Beah (he was the
guest speaker). Basically, Ishmael (see pic) is one of the most
amazing people ever ? at 13 he was a child soldier in Sierra Leone;
after two years he was released by the army and sent to a UNICEF
rehabilitation center where he worked to become normal again. Now,
at 28, Ishmael is a writer (you might have read or seen his book,
?A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Child Soldier?) and an articulate
and extremely powerful speaker. He just kind of imbued the room
with goodness. I mean, he experienced such a horrendously painful
and brutal childhood, but was able to overcome the horrors he
faced, as well as come to terms with his own terrible acts and
forgive himself. We all get stressed out and upset about stuff
(some of us more than others), but hearing someone with Ishmael?s
story say that he wakes up everyday happy to have another day to
enjoy and live his life really does a number on you ? perspective,
man.
