Who Would've Thought?!
Look up "gritty" in the dictionary and you will find a picture of Padraig Harrington. At the PGA, Padraig again displayed what hard work, dedication, passion, and grit can do for your game. One putting the last three greens from outside of ten feet on each hole will go down as one of the most impressive "back nine on Sunday" putting performances in major championship history. A win at last year's British Open turned a pretty good career into a very nice one. Wins at the Britsh Open and at the PGA Championship this year have turned a very nice career into a great one, and have vaulted Padraig all the way up to #3 in the world rankings(By the way, I think it's ridiculous that he's not ranked #2 since Phil hasn't won a major in 2 ½ years). Is Padraig the next Tiger challenger? Maybe, I guess we'll see. One thing that we do know is that it has been an incredible run and that he appears to only be getting better. I wish the U.S. had him for the Ryder Cup on our team.
El Nino = Senor Immaturity
The best major championship performance of his career was also Sergio Garcia's most crushing loss yet. Despite some very solid play during the weekend, Sergio was undoubtedly done in by several poor swings and tight putting strokes on the back nine on Sunday. Instead of commending Padraig for his exceptional play on the weekend, Sergio showed his immaturity and chose to take the "woe is me" attitude yet again after his round. "Why are you trying to make this a disappointment?" snapped Garcia at a questioner behind the 18th green, and "I've said it before, there are guys who get a little fortunate, they get in contention in a major and manage to get things going their way…" Sounds like according to Sergio it was complete luck that Padraig incredibly one-putted the last three greens and eight of the last eleven during back nine major championship pressure. Losing stinks Sergio, but you're not the only one to ever get bad breaks. Grow up and give credit where credit is due for once. Your time will come.

FedEx Cup
Carl Pettersson won the Wyndham Championship on Sunday, defeating Scott McCarron by two shots. Unfortunately, the tournament was about as exciting as that first sentence. Not exactly what the PGA Tour was hoping to use to get fans fired up for this week's first FedEx Cup tourney, but with the world's best (sans El Tigre) gathering for The Barclays this weekend it should provide for some excitement. Sure, the "Golf Playoffs" thing still may not have caught on, but you can't tell me that you weren't rooting for Steve Stricker and his Cinderellaesque run to take it all last year. Also, the Tiger vs. Phil match at the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston last year gave us what we had been craving all season to that point (#1 vs. #2). This year, with Tiger on the DL, it is certainly anyone's game. Also, with the Ryder Cup in the middle of the Playoff action everyone's golf interest should remain tuned up through the regular season's conclusion at the Tour Championship the last week in September. All I know is that it's pretty hard to beat clicking between football and golf on Saturdays and Sundays while kicked back in my recliner.
How Not To Manage a Career
Remember when Kevin Costner was in that bomb of a movie, Waterworld? Or when the great actor Tom Hanks was dressed in drag in the TV show Bosom Buddies? Neither do I. But, the point is someone that was calling the shots thought it would be a great idea. BJ Wie, is well on his way to notoriety. His client, daughter Michelle, just used up her last LPGA exemption capturing 12th place at the (Women's) Canadian Open. Many brilliant Monday morning quarterbacks, (myself included), continually wonder why dad has been sending her to PGA events where her results have been disastrous when she has never won any pro tourney and does not even have her LPGA card. Now, Michelle says she's not sure if she will try for a spot at Q school for next year. If things don't work out, a cameo on Costner's next project might be in order.
Fed Ex Cup-…Absolutely Positively….Confusing
In any other pro sport, the playoffs are pretty simple: the highest score wins and moves on. When golf came up with the 4 week Fed Ex format, everyone scratched their heads. In the end, last year's inaugural event was Tiger's(even with a week off in the middle), so we all figured it was OK. This year it might get a little more interesting. Kenny Perry is the point leader, (sans Tiger), but he's cooled off lately. Will Phil (#2) finally kick his game in gear and actually be awake during the fall this year? Can Padraig (#3) keep the momentum going? My money is on the young, cocky Anthony Kim (#4) from LA. Get your calculators out and let the playoffs begin!
