Awakening Sleeping Beauty

She's ever lovely, ever vivacious, ever charming and regal. "She" of course is the immortal Princess Aurora, the heroine of Walt Disney's animated classic "Sleeping Beauty." But this could also be a description of another lady - Mary Costa, the singer/actress who gave Aurora her voice and brought the gift of song to "Sleeping Beauty."

With Walt's last fairy-tale classic now being released in a deluxe special-edition DVD today, "Sleeping Beauty" is in the spotlight again. Thanks to a meticulous restoration, previously unseen portions of the image (once cropped to fit theater screens) are on view for the first time, and the movie - including Aurora's lovely singing - has never sounded better. In honor of the special-edition release, Mary Costa, still as charming and graceful as ever, told us how she became Princess Aurora - and how she met Walt Disney, one of the great inspirations of her life.

October 7, 1918 - Disney Legend Norman "Stormy" Palmer is born in Santa Ana, California. He is best be known for his contributions to Disney nature and animal films such as "The Living Desert," "Grand Canyon," and "Water Birds."

October 11, 1956 - The Muppets make their network TV debut on "The Steve Allen Show." The Muppets will later become part of the Disney family.

October 11, 1962 - Actress Joan Cusack, the voice of Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl in "Toy Story 2," is born in New York City.

I remember as a child watching "The Magical World of Disney" -- one night they took you on a behind-the-scenes tour and showed there was almost as much underground as above. Do they still offer that tour?

Disneyland does not offer behind-the-scenes tours, but there are several offered at Walt Disney World, including the 7-hour Backstage Magic tour which highlights Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and the Magic Kingdom (where you get to visit the underground Utilidors).
